The first week of summer has come and gone, so it’s time for a check-in. I finished handwriting my second draft *woot-woot*!!!!! The not so great thing is that in order to share it with my wonderful mentor, I have to type it up. So I’ve basically just been typing up this ~60K word second draft. The draft is still a hot mess, but I’m ok with that. There’s time for it to grow.
I’ve been a bit down on myself because I was annoyed at having to take what will probably be another week or two to type up this draft. At the beginning, it felt like a waste of time. But then I had to remember that every writer’s process is different. It’s incredibly difficult to get the first few drafts done on a laptop, I need to use pen and paper. And yes, it takes a ton more time, but it works for me and I like the results. So that’s where I am right now. Once I finish typing up the draft, I’ll send it to my mentor and wait for her edits. While I’m waiting, I’m going to brainstorm my next novel idea. Which I’m so so in love with. It already has an aesthetic and an 80+ song playlist, so I’m in deep. I probably won’t start drafting it until next summer because of PitchWars and revising my current novel so that it can be the very best it can be, but I’m cool with that.
Right now my current work-in-progress is still in the bones stage. I want to make sure that the skeleton is sound. I’m hoping by the end of the summer, I’ll be either in the muscle stage or even close to done with the muscle stage. And then I’m hoping during PitchWars, I’ll be focusing on the skin and makeup stage. I’m trying to be really productive in terms of revising this summer, because the more I do now the less I have to do during October/November when I’m finishing up college apps. I apologize for the weird metaphor, but that’s how I’ve been approaching revisions so that I don’t get too overwhelmed by how much this manuscript still needs.
I’ve also slowly but surely gotten back into reading, so a couple of book reviews will be on their way soon. (I JUST FINISHED FROM TWINKLE, WITH LOVE AND I’M READY TO GUSH!!!!!!) My goal is to read for 30 mins every day. It’s not as much as I like, but it’s something that I know I can hit. And it’s all about balance this summer. I’m trying to give enough time to revisions, sat prep, working on college apps, the blog, reading, interning, being a present family and friend, applying for scholarships. All things that are super important to me and deserve time. I’ve really started to utilize my out-of-school planner, and that’s been super helpful. I think I assumed that the summer days would feel longer, and that just hasn’t been the case yet. But I actually like being busy, I love feeling productive. I’ve just had to realize that I can’t tackle everything every single day.
In next week’s update, I’ll talk about what writing-related podcasts I’ve been listening to so that there’s a least a little something helpful in my rambles.
Happy writing, happy reading, and happy blogging!
